destination guide: chiang rai

The beating heart of Northern Thailand can be found in Chiang Rai. Beyond the predictable guidebook descriptions, Chiang Rai offers an enigmatic charm that speaks to those who seek the extraordinary. Chiang Rai is not merely a destination; it’s an experience that resonates with the soul of those who dare to explore.

As you traverse the winding roads that lead to Chiang Rai, you’ll soon find yourself in the midst of rolling hills and pristine landscapes. The air is crisp, and the scent of the lush forests is a refreshing elixir for the senses. But Chiang Rai’s allure extends far beyond its breathtaking scenery.

At the heart of this enigmatic land is a celebration of authenticity, where the people have preserved their time-honored customs and beliefs. In Chiang Rai, you’ll encounter hill tribes, each with its own unique customs and dialects. On our Extraordinary Road Trip or Hilltribe Hike experiences you can engage with Akha, Lisu, and Karen communities as they warmly welcome you into their world, sharing their crafts, traditions, and a piece of their vibrant culture.

Chiang Rai is a place of artistic wonder, where contemporary art seamlessly mingles with the serenity of temples. The famed Wat Rong Khun, or the White Temple, is an architectural marvel that showcases a blend of tradition and modernity. Its intricate carvings and ornate details stand as a testament to the artistic genius that graces this land – a genius also evident at the studio of famed local artist Sangiam Yarangsee, a friend of Smiling Albino who loves talking to our guests about his work.

The culinary adventures in Chiang Rai are a voyage in themselves. Savor delectable dishes bursting with unique flavors, from fiery curries to aromatic stir-fries. The local markets are a treasure trove of culinary curiosities where you can sample the flavors of the region, from savory street food to exotic delicacies.

WHEN TO GO

Chiang Rai has very clearly defined wet and dry seasons, so if outdoor activities – particularly trekking – are your thing, you’ll want to avoid the summer months, when it’s one of the wettest places in Thailand.

For us, the best time to visit is October to February, when the weather is dry and cool. March and April are best avoided due to a combination of high heat, and smog from the burning of sugar cane fields throughout the north.
