destination guide: phnom penh

Get ready to dive into the whirlwind of excitement that is Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s bustling capital that blends the old and the new in one vibrant, chaotic, and utterly lovable mash-up.

Sure, Phnom Penh has a wild nightlife scene that will have you partying till the break of dawn, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Want some history with your adventure? Brace yourself for a visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former high school turned into a chilling reminder of the Khmer Rouge era. It’s heavy stuff, but it’s a must-see to really understand the tragic history and resilient spirit of this incredible country.

Now, let’s talk food! Prepare your taste buds for a rollercoaster of flavors. From sizzling street food to fancy-schmancy restaurants, Phnom Penh has it all. Dive into a steaming bowl of fish amok, the holy grail of Cambodian cuisine, or grab some crispy fried tarantulas if you’re feeling adventurous (yes, you read that right!). And don’t forget to wash it all down with some fresh coconut water or, better yet, a cheeky cocktail at one of the rooftop bars with panoramic views that will leave you breathless.

When you’re not munching your way through the city, take a tuk-tuk ride to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, where you’ll be blown away by the dazzling architecture and the shimmering treasures. Feel like pampering yourself? Get lost in the maze of markets where you can snag some killer bargains or treat yourself to a rejuvenating spa session that will have you feeling like a million bucks.

Oh, and did we mention the hotels? We must finish with the hotels. Phnom Penh boasts some seriously swanky accommodation that will have you living like royalty. Take in the stunning views of the city skyline from your plush suite, and let the luxury seep into your soul as you unwind from the day’s adventures.

WHEN TO GO

Phnom Penh’s climate follows the typical Southeast Asian pattern – warm, wet summers and cooler, dry winters.

Given the rainfall rarely last longer than an hour, there isn’t really a bad time to visit Cambodia’s capital; however the heat in April & May can be extreme, especially for wandering around outdoors. As such, we recommend travelling between December & March, when rain is very rare and the temperatures are a little more bearable.
