Top Chiang Mai Hotels

The Four Seasons Resort beckons

Chiang Mai while physically small in the minds of most travelers prior to visiting is in reality quite a sprawling area. Known as the cultural capital of the north, Chiang Mai has also developed into the art and design center of Thailand, making it one of the best places to witness ancient Thai architecture and shop for art, handicrafts and antiques. Although many artistic genres reflect what is currently available in Chiang Mai, the prevailing influence comes from the traditional ‘Lanna’ style, referring to one of Thailand’s early kingdoms dating to thirteenth century.

The volume of choices for hotels in Chiang Mai can be overwhelming. Smiling Albino’s policy has always been to only recommend hotels we have preferably stayed at, but at the very least inspected, felt the sheets, tried the shower, fussed about with the facilities and asked for extra towels to see how the service rates. We have sampled all kinds of accommodations, from fine luxury hotels to new boutique resorts to family owned lodgings. Having done this we’re proud to share some best picks, all of which offer great value to the discerning traveler.

Crank out the Platinum Card

Four Seasons Resort
It’s all in the name and this property is everything you would expect from one of the world leaders in 5-star hotel service and delivery. Located roughly 30 minutes north of the city center on gorgeous terraced fields facing the mountains, spacious villas are set amongst a working rice paddy with grazing water buffalo. Impeccable, inspired service, outstanding architecture and one of the word’s best spas top a list of superlatives for Four Seasons Chiang Mai. Ideal for those seeking enlightened luxury and service while away from the hustle and bustle of Chiang Mai City.

Dhara Dhevi Mandarin Oriental
Best described as a luxury Lanna Kingdom unto itself, this sprawling property features 124 luxury suites set amongst serene rice paddies, temple roof spires, courtyards and exotic plantations. The Dhara Dhevi is a transformational world of beauty and wellness, and features a display of beautiful Lanna artifacts throughout the property. Choose from the spacious Colonial Wing or Thai Villas, all of which are lavishly appointed in the manner of a fine luxury resort. The Dhara Dhevi is located about 5km from the city, so exploring is also rather convenient.

The gorgeous Rachamankha

Where It's At

Rachamankha
A true boutique hotel, the 24-room Rachamankha is an inspired property designed in the classic style of a Lanna temple. A winner of numerous accolades, it is a brilliantly conceived hotel and perhaps the best overall value in its category. Aromatic frangipani trees line Sino-Thai style courtyards which reveal exquisite antiques including Burmese manuscript boxes, Chinese porcelain and collector's lithographs. Designed by an established Thai architect and interior designer, the rooms feature solid wooden doors, four-poster beds, bamboo jalousies, and woven-reed mats. Located just inside the western moat in the heart of the old city, the grounds and museum-style setting create a dignified, intimate atmosphere where you’ll quickly slide into a very ‘sabai’ (calm) world. The Rachamankha is ideal for architecture and design enthusiasts and for those who like being close to the action while ensconced in quiet luxury.

The Chedi
Part of the GHM hotel group, the emphasis here is new, sleek and chic. A modern building set on the banks of the Ping River, The Chedi is a designer hotel gives an air of cool from the moment you enter with smooth lines, water gardens, subtle colors and a calming ambience. Spacious common areas, two great restaurants and one of our favourite happy hours in Thailand make this a great place to talk about.

Bang for Buck

Shewe Wana Resort
This cozy, 18-room boutique resort is a refreshing property personally designed by the family owners. The Shewe Wana is 500m east of the Ping River in heart of Chiang Mai City, making it an ideal place to strike out and see the town. The rooms are cute and charming with an emphasis on using natural, locally-made products. The pleasant grounds feature lush gardens and a small pool. A nice spa is also attached, a perfect retreat for body and soul after a day exploring Chiang Mai.

Sri Tara
Situated along the banks of the Ping River about two kilometers from the famous Night Bazaar, this hotel opened its doors and 28 rooms in early 2008. Mostly white design with dark black accents creates a modern atmosphere with thoughtful Thai touches. This is one of the best value rooms in the city with a very slick edge.

Tamarind Village
A long-established Chiang Mai favorite located in the heart of the old city, the Tamarind Village is a solid choice. Stylish and calming, it was designed by the architect who created the Rachamankha, with a large Tamarind tree as its centerpiece. With less than 50 rooms, it maintains a small boutique hotel charm, and is a relatively good value - great for families.

Mountain magic

Stylish cool at Proud Phu Fah

Proud Phu Fah
Conceived and operated by a former advertising creative director, this self proclaimed ‘hip’ resort is perfect for a true mountain escape. Located about 45 minutes north of the city along the Mae Sae road, two or three nights will wash your stress away. Modern, glass villas are situated on a small mountain with a large common area, great coffee, tasty food and a very relaxed atmosphere. Elephant rides, waterfalls and other activities are very near by too. Check-in and chill-out.
