Highland Farm and Gibbon Sanctuary

A beautiful relationship came about in 2000 while exploring the remote corners of Thailand’s Tak province. We stumbled upon Highland Farm and Gibbon Sanctuary, home to 37 mistreated gibbon apes and a host of other creatures in need and were instantly inspired.

Started in 1991 by retirees Pharanee (Thai) and William Deters (American), their original intent was to simply reforest their newly purchased 35-acres of land and help reverse the loss of vanishing Thai forest. Quite by accident they ended up with one, then over the next few years, many more gibbons in need of a safe and loving environment.

Run entirely on the Deters’ pension and private donations, Highland is a glimmer of hope for creatures that have too often had their homes encroached upon and been abused by their human counterparts. Since 2001, Smiling Albino has been proud to donate a portion of all client revenues to help care for ‘Jerry’ the gibbon and other residents at Highland Farm.

Now more than ever Highland Farm needs the support of those who love animals, as William Deters suddenly passed away in May 2002. His loving wife continues to care for her ‘kids’ - as she calls them – and we’re doing everything we can to help with her inspirational work, surmounting costs and spread the word about this wonderful sanctuary.
